Former President Trump says Mark Green has his ‘complete and total endorsement’ to run in 2024
A prominent House Republican lawmaker, Mark Green from Tennessee, has decided to reverse his retirement plans after being encouraged by former President Trump.
On Thursday, Green, who chairs the House Homeland Security Committee, announced his change of heart regarding not seeking a fourth term.
In a statement to US Newzs Digital, Green said, “Although my original intention was to retire from Congress at the end of this year, I have been inundated with calls from constituents, colleagues, and President Trump urging me to reconsider.”
He continued, “I have decided to run for re-election so that I can be present from Day 1 next year to assist President Trump in finally resolving this border crisis once and for all.”
Shortly after Trump urged him to reconsider his Truth Social account, Mark Green made his announcement. The former president said he would endorse Green if he decided to run.
“Mark Green has plenty of options due to his political talents and the excellent job he’s done as a Congressman. However, considering his fantastic work as Chairman of the Homeland Security Committee, I hope he runs for re-election to the U.S. House of Representatives. If he does, he has my complete and total endorsement!” Trump wrote.
In addition to seeking his re-election, Trump is leveraging his influence in House and Senate races nationwide through various endorsements and behind-the-scenes efforts.
Recently, Mark Green met with House Speaker Mike Johnson from Louisiana and Representative Richard Hudson from North Carolina, who chairs the National Republican Congressional Committee, the campaign arm for House Republicans.
Their meeting took place at Mar-a-Lago earlier this month. It focused primarily on discussions about the upcoming 2024 election cycle, as well as strategies to maintain and expand Johnson’s narrow two-seat House majority.
In his capacity as Chairman of the Homeland Security Committee, Green has been instrumental in the House’s impeachment proceedings against Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas. Reflecting on his role, Green described it to US Newzs Digital as “challenging, rewarding, and meaningful.”
“At this time, I am incredibly proud of and thankful for my fellow Republican Committee members and the staff of the Homeland Security Committee,” Green expressed.
“I will always remember the dedication and countless hours they devoted to addressing an unprecedented and self-inflicted border crisis by holding Secretary Mayorkas accountable and passing H.R. 2.”
