Deputy treasury secretary says US and partners are ready to take action
On Friday, President Biden announced that the U.S. would impose over 500 new sanctions on Russia. According to the U.S. Treasury, these sanctions will affect more than 500 targets.
The White House stated that these sanctions would be implemented on the second anniversary of Russia’s occupation of Ukraine.
According to Reuters, Deputy U.S. Treasury Secretary Wally Adeyemo stated that the U.S., in collaboration with other nations, is focusing on targeting Russia’s military-industrial complex, as well as companies in countries that assist Russia in accessing materials and goods it requires.
These actions are being taken as the U.S. seeks to hold Russian President Vladimir Putin responsible for the conflict with Ukraine and the death of Alexei Navalny, a prominent figure in the Russian opposition.
“These sanctions will focus on individuals linked to Navalny’s imprisonment, as well as targeting Russia’s financial sector, defense industry, procurement networks, and individuals evading sanctions across various continents,” Biden stated in a statement. “They will ensure Putin faces an even higher cost for his aggressive actions abroad and oppressive measures at home.”
The White House stated that these sanctions are intended to prevent Russia from acquiring the resources necessary for weapon development, while also impeding the country’s access to revenue required for economic growth and expanding its arsenal.
US Newzs Digital’s inquiries on the matter were not immediately addressed by the U.S. Treasury.
This new set of sanctions adds to the thousands of others imposed on Russia by the U.S. and its allies following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
Since the occupation began, Russia has been held accountable for the deaths of tens of thousands of people and the destruction of numerous cities, leaving them in ruins.
Earlier on Thursday, Biden met with Yulia and Dasha Navalnaya, the wife and daughter of Navalny, respectively, in San Francisco, California.
Following the meeting, Biden informed reporters that he and his administration would be unveiling sanctions against Putin, asserting that the Russian president bears responsibility for Navalny’s demise.
The White House further stated in a release that the Biden administration intends to reveal new sanctions against Russia on Friday “in reaction to [Alexei’s] death, Russia’s oppression and hostility, and its ruthless and unlawful conflict in Ukraine.”
