In Utah canyon, a teen taking pictures plummets to his death: 'Loved by many'

A 19-year-old hiker in Utah tragically fell to his death while capturing photos at Moonscape Overlook last weekend, as reported by his family.

Jonathan Fielding, who had recently moved to the state, was hiking with friends near Hanksville, Utah, last Saturday when the incident took place, according to FOX 13 Salt Lake City and his obituary. Fielding resided in Orem, Utah, approximately three hours away from the location of the accident.

“Although Jonathan’s passing was unexpected, we find some solace in knowing that he was engaged in what he loved at the time of the accident,” expressed his obituary. “He was on a photo shoot with friends in the beautiful Utah wilderness, a place he cherished.”

Fielding’s sister, Rebecca, referred to the incident as a “tragic accident” and described it as a cautionary tale.

“It was a tragic accident, but Jonathan should serve as a cautionary tale for anyone who hikes or engages in photography,” she shared on Facebook. “No scenic view is worth the pain that your family and friends will endure. No view is worth the risk that rescuers take when attempting to save individuals and retrieve bodies.”

A fundraising page for his family described Fielding as a “great example of selfless love.”

He is survived by his parents, grandparents, and five sisters.

Fielding grew up in Missouri where he was a pole vaulter at his high school and was an Eagle Scout. He was also a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

“Jonathan genuinely cared about others. He would truly listen to you, being a friend in every sense of the word. He had numerous friends and served as a positive influence,” expressed his obituary. “Although Jonathan’s time in life was cut short, his impact on others was enduring. He was loved by many and will be deeply missed by all who knew him.”
