The sequence of events began when authorities received a concerning call at 12:07 p.m. on Thursday regarding a friend who had gone for a run near the Intramural Fields, as stated by UGA Police Chief Jeff Clark. Subsequently, a search ensued, leading to the discovery of an unconscious individual with visible injuries behind Lake Herrick at 12:38 p.m. Despite immediate medical attention, the person was pronounced dead at the scene upon the arrival of emergency medical personnel.
The deceased woman was identified as a student from another university, although specific details were not disclosed by Clark due to the ongoing nature of the investigation.
The university emphasized that foul play is suspected in the woman’s death, prompting involvement from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation and the Athens-Clarke County Police Department. While no suspect has been identified, Clark assured that there is no immediate threat to UGA’s campus.
As a precautionary measure, individuals were advised to steer clear of the area, and all evening classes on Thursday and Friday were canceled. Normal class schedules are expected to resume on Monday.
Additionally, the university revealed the unfortunate death of a UGA student in Brumby Hall dormitory the day prior, though details were not disclosed. Despite the proximity in timing, Clark asserted that the two incidents are unrelated.
