In Madison, Wisconsin, a female University of Wisconsin student was subjected to a severe beating in the early hours of Sunday morning, prompting an increased police presence in the area.

The incident occurred on the 500 block of W. Wilson St. around 3:20 a.m. on Sunday, and the victim sustained life-threatening injuries.

“The victim was rushed to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. She remains in critical condition,” the Madison Police Department stated.

According to the police, this appears to be an attack by a stranger, and efforts are underway to provide support and resources to the victim’s friends and family.

A friend of the victim informed WISN-12 that she had been strangled, beaten, and sexually assaulted.

The Madison Police Department has announced an increase in patrols in the vicinity following the incident. Detectives are urging residents living in the immediate area where the attack occurred to provide any relevant home security footage to aid in the investigation.

UW-Madison has also issued an email to the school community, confirming that the suspect involved in the incident remains at large.

“We are deeply concerned for this student, and our thoughts are with them and their family during this challenging time,” stated the email, obtained by Fox News Digital.

“The suspect or suspects involved in the incident are still at large. Consequently, law enforcement is stepping up patrols and visibility in the area, while also encouraging the community to stay vigilant and be mindful of their safety and surroundings,” the university added.
