To participate in the Republican primary debates, Trump would have to sign the pledge
Former President Trump has stated that he will not be endorsing a loyalty pledge to the Republican Party, casting uncertainty on his participation in debates alongside fellow GOP candidates.
In an interview with Newsmax on Wednesday, Trump expressed his reluctance to commit to such a pledge. Speaking on “Eric Bolling’s The Balance,” he shared his perspective that the act of signing the pledge would lack merit.
“I have no intention of signing the pledge,” Trump affirmed. He questioned the rationale behind appending his signature to a commitment that includes individuals he might not align with.

“I don’t endorse certain people,” the former president remarked, reflecting on the array of candidates. “They want you to commit by signing the pledge,” he explained, highlighting his reservations.
“There are three or four people, I’m not going to come back to the presidency,” Trump said, pointing to apparent concern. “That in itself presents a dilemma.”

Trump expressed his specific displeasure at the lenient criteria for participation in the Republican debate, based on turnout and national support.
The former president emphasized his reluctance to give a platform to candidates who do not have significant support and have a small vote share. He made clear his desire that such candidates should not be given an opportunity to make derogatory remarks against him.
“In the debates, they want me to participate, but it’s not really fair. You have people like Asa Hutchinson, who has zero percent support, asking me tough questions,” Trump remarked. “Even Chris Christie, with only 1% support, will ask me tough questions, along with others.”
Trump also pointed out that past Republican Presidents Reagan and Nixon chose not to take part in primary debates.
“Why would you participate when you’re leading so significantly?” Trump questioned. “Ronald Reagan and Nixon didn’t do it; many others didn’t either.”
In wrapping up, he stated, “I’m going to consider it carefully. I’m interested in participating. I’ve received positive feedback on my debating skills. Yet, the desire is for a capable president, someone intelligent. Therefore, we need to make wise choices.”
