In a speech hosted by the New York Young Republican Club on Saturday, former President Trump dismissed Democrats’ warnings about the potential threat to democracy posed by his return to the White House in 2024 as a “hoax” and “misinformation.” Instead, he asserted that President Biden is the “real threat.” He predicted the end of Biden’s “Banana Republic” after the 2024 presidential election.

Trump accused the radical left Democrats and their purported fake news allies of unveiling a new hoax, drawing parallels to previous controversies like “Russia, Russia, Russia,” “Mueller, Mueller, Mueller,” and “Ukraine, Ukraine, Ukraine.” According to Trump, these allegations are just a continuation of a pattern of unfounded claims against him and the Republican Party.

“But, no, I’m not a threat; I will save democracy. The real threat is Crooked Joe Biden,” he asserted.

The former president labeled claims of him being a threat to democracy as a “hoax” and a “new idea,” coining it the “threat to democracy hoax.”

Trump further argued that Democrats and the media are promoting this narrative to divert attention from Biden’s responsibility for what he deemed the worst inflation in the country’s history and a fragile economy that might lead to a depression akin to 1929. He expressed concern, stating, “We are very, very close to a depression, the likes of which you have never seen. We owe $36 trillion, and this guy has no clue.”

He also characterized the claims of a threat to democracy as a “desperate and shameless attempt to distract from the monstrous abuses of power the left is committing before your very eyes.”

As Biden and other Democrats express concerns about the potential damage to U.S. democracy in a second Trump presidency, both leaders are gearing up for a potential rematch of the 2020 election. Speaking at a fundraiser in Los Angeles, Biden asserted that “the greatest threat Trump poses is to the democracy.”

While facing 91 federal counts from four separate investigations, Trump cautioned Biden that any attempt to indict him could result in retaliation if he returns to the White House.

“He has opened up a Pandora’s box that will never allow our country to be the same. I can only say to Joe: Be very careful what you wish for, but what you have done is a terrible thing,” Trump remarked, emphasizing that these are indictments from Biden against his political opponent.

Recently, Trump has discussed the possibility of imposing “retribution” against political enemies if he returns to the White House after the upcoming election. When questioned by Fox News host Sean Hannity during a town hall last week about the potential abuse of power, Trump responded, “Except for day one.”

“Except for day one. I want to close the border, and I want to drill, drill, drill,” Trump told Hannity.

During Saturday’s speech, Trump accused the media of misrepresenting his comments to Hannity. He clarified that when he mentioned wanting to be a dictator for one day, it was in the context of expressing his desire for specific policies—building a wall and expanding drilling activities.

“I said I want to be a dictator for one day… and you know why I wanted to be a dictator? Because I want a wall… and I want to drill, drill, drill,” he explained.

Trump’s earlier remarks about wanting to be a dictator, particularly about policy goals, have sparked criticism from press freedom groups. They argue that such statements are perceived as “anti-democratic.” Trump had previously suggested at a 2022 rally that he would consider the idea of imprisoning reporters who refused to disclose their sources.

At the time, the former president had stated, “You tell the reporter, ‘Who is it’ … and if the reporter doesn’t want to tell you, it’s ‘bye bye.’ The reporter goes to jail.”

Concluding his speech on Saturday, Trump confidently predicted his return to the White House with a commitment to “make America great again.”

“We will cast off the sick political class that harbors hatred for our country,” Trump declared. “We will overcome the challenges posed by the fake news media. We will remove Joe Biden from the White House, and we will complete the job of making our country great again once and for all.”
