Trump, Biden nearly tied as general election kicks off: poll

A significant portion of respondents reported being unhappy with both candidates

Former President Donald Trump holds a slight lead over President Biden in a new poll conducted after both candidates unofficially secured their parties’ nominations.

After meeting the necessary delegate thresholds, Trump and Biden emerged as the presumptive nominees for their respective parties on Tuesday.

According to the USA Today poll, conducted in collaboration with Suffolk University, 40% of respondents expressed support for Trump, while 38% favored Biden.

A notable discovery from the survey was the significant portion of registered voters who are open to changing their voting preferences. Around 25% of those surveyed indicated they would be willing to reconsider their vote before the election—this includes 14% of likely Biden voters and 15% of likely Trump voters.

With both Trump and Biden surpassing the delegate thresholds necessary to virtually secure their nominations on Tuesday, the anticipation for a 2020 rematch is high.

Both candidates have encountered significant unpopularity among voters, reflected in similar lukewarm approval ratings during their presidencies.

However, it remains uncertain whether Biden will agree to Trump’s invitations for a public debate. The Biden administration has refrained from addressing questions on this topic, leaving the possibility open but unclear.

The USA Today/Suffolk University poll sampled 1,000 registered voters, reaching out to respondents via both cell phones and landlines.
