Nikki Haley blasts Republicans over speaker battle: ‘Get it together’

Jim Jordan was nominated by the GOP, but it’s not clear he can win on the floor

Republican presidential candidate Nikki Haley has expressed her concerns about the ongoing disunity among House Republicans in the fight to choose the next House speaker, insisting that the infighting is harmful to the country.

During her appearance on CNN’s “State of the Union” with Jake Tapper, Haley stated, “They need to come together. They need to come together and decide who this person is and emerge as a united front.”

Haley’s comments echo the current state of Congress, which has been thrown into turmoil after Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla., prompted a vote that led to the removal of former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy from his role. This, in turn, led to a contentious battle within the GOP over the identity of the next speaker.

On Friday, Ohio Republican Rep. Jim Jordan received his party’s nomination for Speaker of the House. However, the vote has yet to go to the House floor for a final decision.

With 55 Republicans revealing in a secret ballot that they would not support him on the House floor if he was formally nominated for speaker, Jordan’s chances of being elected to the role were in doubt. This lack of support leaves Jordan short of the 217 Republican votes needed to secure the speakership on the House floor.

In the midst of this Republican infighting, Democrats took the opportunity to mock Republicans and promote the idea of electing a more moderate candidate, or even a Democrat, for the position of Speaker of the House.

In her interview with CNN, Haley said the Democrats have plunged the country into chaos, citing inflation, the border, and numerous wars around the world. GOP hopefuls say Republicans won’t be able to get the country back on track if they split.

“You can’t solve a Democrat’s mess with a Republican’s mess,” Haley said, calling on the House GOP to unite around one candidate.

“That’s what Republicans should do,” Haley said. “It’s not a good look.”

Haley pointed to events around the world, including the recent Hamas attacks on Israel, arguing that infighting among Republicans has contributed to the “distraction” of America and made the world a more dangerous place.

“We saw what happened when Israel was distracted,” Haley said. “America seems very distracted right now. The world is less safe when America is distracted.”
