Former Trump administration member Mike Gill has recently passed away due to injuries sustained after being carjacked in Washington, D.C., as reported by US Newzs.

Mike Gill, who previously served as the chief of staff at the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), was shot while sitting in his vehicle on Monday night. The incident occurred around 5:45 p.m. in the 900 block of K Street NW when a suspect entered his car and shot him.

Police have identified the suspect as Artell Cunningham, 28. Authorities reported that after the initial incident, Cunningham attempted to steal another vehicle approximately an hour later. Subsequently, he approached other individuals and demanded their keys.

One of the individuals approached by Artell Cunningham was Alberto Vasquez, Jr., 35, whom Cunningham is accused of shooting and killing in a carjacking at 3rd and N Streets Northeast. Cunningham was subsequently shot and killed by law enforcement.

Kristina Gill, Mike Gill’s wife, conveyed the news of her husband’s death to US Newzs DC.

“It is with profound sadness that I wish to inform the community of the passing of my husband, Mike Gill,” Kristina said in a statement. “His sudden departure has left a void in our lives that can never be filled.”

“In this time of grief, we are grateful for the outpouring of love and support from family, friends, and the community, and extend our heartfelt gratitude to everyone who has reached out to offer condolences and assistance.”

At the time of his death, Gill was serving as the Senior Vice President for Capital Markets at the Housing Policy Council, a nonprofit organization. He is remembered as a beloved father, husband, and friend.

Former CFTC chairman Christopher Giancarlo described Gill as “one of the most wonderful, honest, earnest, and open-hearted persons on this earth.”

“His life reflects everything good and right and true,” Giancarlo told US Newzs. “Words cannot express the tragedy of the loss of this fine man, colleague, and cherished friend. He will be sorely missed and long remembered.”

Carjacking incidents in Washington, D.C., have notably increased in recent years, leading to frustration and concern among law-abiding residents. In October, Representative Henry Cuellar, D-Texas, was carjacked at gunpoint.

In November 2023, D.C. police reported 250 homicides from January through November, marking the highest numbers the city had witnessed since 2003. During the same period, 908 carjackings were recorded, with 77% involving firearms.

In December, a 17-year-old named Devonta Lynch was charged with armed carjacking after allegedly stealing an FBI agent’s car.

According to the Metropolitan Police Department’s website, there have been 53 reported carjackings since January 1, with 53% of the incidents involving firearms. Only 10 of these cases have been closed.
