King Charles cancer sparks renewed interest in royal lines of succession

On May 6, 2023, King Charles III was crowned during Britain’s first coronation in 70 years

King Charles III was recently diagnosed with cancer and is currently undergoing treatment. As the king focuses on his health, his eldest son, Prince William, has increased royal responsibilities as he is next in line for the throne.

Buckingham Palace announced on Monday that Charles, 75, had been diagnosed with a form of cancer. The palace did not say what type of cancer the British monarch had, but said it was not related to his recent treatment for a benign prostate condition.

After learning of his ailing father, Prince Harry flew to the U.K. the next day to pay a brief visit to the monarch at his London residence, Clarence House. A day later, the Duke of Sussex left the U.K.

Reportedly, the estranged prince is not allowed to stay in any royal residence and has not been reunited with his brother Prince William.

On the same day, Prince William resumed his royal duties by attending his first engagement since his wife Princess Catherine (Kate Middleton) was hospitalized after undergoing abdominal surgery. The Princess of Wales is currently recovering from an undisclosed condition and is expected to resume her royal duties after Easter in late March.
