Vice president’s campaign says cash haul is ‘largest 24-hour raise in presidential history’
In a stunning display of support, Vice President Kamala Harris’s campaign announced a record-breaking $81 million haul within 24 hours following President Joe Biden’s withdrawal from the re-election race. This impressive feat marks the largest single-day fundraising in presidential history.
According to the Harris campaign’s email release on Monday afternoon, the unprecedented fundraising was fueled by over 888,000 grassroots donors, 60% of whom were first-time contributors in the 2024 election cycle.
Notably, 43,000 of these donors have committed to recurring donations, underscoring a robust base of ongoing support.
While the campaign didn’t specify the breakdown of small-dollar versus large-dollar donations, it’s clear that the collective effort included contributions to the campaign itself, the Democratic National Committee (DNC), and joint fundraising committees.
Campaign spokesperson Kevin Munoz highlighted the significance of this achievement, stating, “The historic outpouring of support for Vice President Harris represents exactly the kind of grassroots energy and enthusiasm that wins elections. Already, we are seeing a broad and diverse coalition come together to support our critical work of talking to the voters that will decide this election.”
The $81 million raised by Harris eclipses the nearly $53 million former President Trump’s campaign and the Republican National Committee (RNC) garnered two months ago, following Trump’s legal troubles in New York City. This monumental fundraising effort comes at a pivotal moment, as the Democratic Party rallies behind Harris after Biden’s exit.
President Biden’s decision to suspend his campaign came after mounting pressure from within the party, following a lackluster debate performance that raised concerns about his ability to continue for another term. At 81 years old, Biden’s uneven debate delivery prompted questions about his readiness to serve four more years.
The influx of funds for Harris is set to rejuvenate the Biden campaign’s war chest, which had dwindled amid dwindling support. Munoz emphasized the urgency and enthusiasm behind Harris’s campaign, asserting that “there is a groundswell behind Kamala Harris, and Donald Trump is terrified because he knows his divisive, unpopular agenda can’t stand up to the Vice President’s record and vision for the American people.”
As the Harris campaign surges ahead, it’s worth noting that despite earlier fundraising successes, Trump and the RNC outpaced Biden and the DNC in the second quarter of 2024, raising $331 million compared to $264 million. However, with this latest influx, the Harris campaign is poised to significantly bolster its resources and mobilize support as the race intensifies.
