Four in five Americans fear nation spiraling into chaos, new poll finds

About 80% of Americans agreed the country is ‘spiraling out of control,’ a new Ipsos/Reuters poll found

According to a recent two-day poll conducted by Ipsos for Reuters, about four in five Americans believe that the country is descending into chaos.

The poll was carried out after a recent assassination attempt on former President Trump at his rally in Pennsylvania and shortly after Trump announced Senator JD Vance, R-Ohio, as his vice-presidential running mate at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee.

The survey found that approximately 80% of respondents agreed with the statement that “the country is spiraling out of control.” Furthermore, 86% of Americans expressed concern about acts of violence potentially plunging the nation into chaos, with 56% of them being very concerned. The poll also revealed that 87% of respondents are worried that Americans might resort to violence rather than finding peaceful solutions to disagreements, with 57% being very concerned about this issue.

The online poll surveyed 1,202 adults aged 18 and older, including 402 Democrats, 361 Republicans, and 331 Independents.

The poll found that 84% of voters surveyed were concerned that extremists might commit acts of violence after the election. This marks a significant increase from the 74% who expressed this fear in a Reuters/Ipsos poll conducted in May.

Additionally, 67% of Americans said they feared acts of violence against their community due to their political beliefs, up from 60% in a June 2023 Reuters/Ipsos poll.

Remarkably, about one in three respondents believed that Trump was favored by divine providence after surviving the assassination attempt on Saturday.

The survey also indicated a tight race between the presidential candidates, with 43% of registered voters preferring Trump, the Republican candidate, and 41% preferring President Biden, the Democratic incumbent. These results fall within the poll’s three percentage point margin of error. Furthermore, the poll revealed that 69% of Americans view Biden as too old to work in government, compared to 49% who see Trump as too old.

The online poll sampled 1,202 adults, including registered voters – 402 Democrats, 361 Republicans, and 331 Independents.
