GOP Senator Pete Ricketts from Nebraska is calling for a disciplinary inquiry into Hunter Biden’s lawyers team. This comes after a judge accused one of the lawyers, Jessica Bengels from the law firm Latham & Watkins, of lying about her identity to court officials.
In a statement to Fox News Digital, Sen. Pete Ricketts expressed concern over the perceived weaponization of the justice system against President Biden’s political opponents, while alleging that his son, Hunter Biden, is receiving preferential treatment. Ricketts emphasized the need for accountability in cases of misconduct or favoritism, including within Hunter Biden’s legal team. The senator believes that the recent mishandling of cases by the Biden administration has severely damaged faith in the justice system, and he considers restoring its integrity to be crucial.

U.S. District Judge Maryellen Noreika issued an order this week threatening sanctions against Hunter Biden’s lawyers. The judge accused Jessica Bengels of misrepresenting her identity and affiliation to convince the Clerk’s Office to remove a key document from an ongoing criminal tax case involving President Biden’s son.
According to the order issued by U.S. District Judge Maryellen Noreika, Jessica Bengels, a lawyer from Latham & Watkins, allegedly contacted the clerk’s office and falsely claimed association with lawyers from the House Republican Ways & Means Committee. This committee had been conducting an investigation into Hunter Biden. Hunter Biden’s legal team stated that the incident was an “unfortunate and unintentional miscommunication” involving a staff member at their firm and court employees.
In response to this incident, GOP Senator Pete Ricketts is urging courts in both New York and Washington, D.C. – where Hunter Biden’s lawyers are licensed to practice – to initiate an ethics investigation into Jessica Bengels and the lead lawyer, Christopher Clark. Ricketts is concerned about potential misconduct and seeks accountability to maintain the integrity of the legal process.
“I am writing to address what appears to be unethical conduct by members of the New York State Bar and the District of Columbia Bar. As we are all aware, the legal profession places great emphasis on ethics. It is expected that all legal professionals, be they lawyers or non-lawyers, adhere to rigorous standards to uphold the integrity of the legal system and protect the interests of colleagues, clients, and the court,” Senator Pete Ricketts expressed in a letter sent on Friday.

“In light of recent events, particularly the dissolution of the plea agreement between Hunter Biden and U.S. attorneys, I am urging both the New York Departmental Disciplinary Committee for the First Department and the District of Columbia’s Office of Disciplinary Counsel to promptly investigate the actions of attorneys Christopher Clark and Jessica L. Bengels.”
Senator Ricketts’ letter comes in the aftermath of the breakdown of a plea agreement involving Hunter Biden and federal prosecutors. He is calling for a thorough examination of the conduct of Christopher Clark and Jessica L. Bengels, seeking swift action to address any potential ethical violations in their professional roles as attorneys.
“In light of the allegations of misrepresentation, the specific details of which remain uncertain, it is evident that an ethical boundary may have been breached,” stated Senator Pete Ricketts. “Regardless of whether the contact with the clerk’s office was made by Ms. Jessica Bengels or another staff member from Latham & Watkins, the circumstances surrounding the incident warrant a thorough investigation.”
Senator Ricketts further emphasized that it was the responsibility of Christopher Clark, as the lead lawyer representing Hunter Biden, to ensure that his legal team adhered to the Rules of Professional Conduct. He believes it is the duty of the courts, legislatures, and state bars to oversee the conduct of legal professionals and ensure compliance with these rules.
Consequently, the senator has formally requested both the New York Departmental Disciplinary Committee for the First Department and the District of Columbia’s Office of Disciplinary Counsel to initiate investigations into the actions of both Christopher Clark and Jessica Bengels.
