Gov. Ron DeSantis and former President Trump ultimately hesitated to pledge to endorse the GOP nominee
The Florida Republican Party has introduced a new rule that will mandate 2024 presidential candidates to sign a loyalty pledge in order to participate in the state’s primary next year.
This requirement, which was submitted to state election officials by the state GOP, may pose a challenge for some Republican candidates who have been hesitant about endorsing a loyalty pledge. The pledge would oblige candidates to support the eventual winner of the Republican primary, regardless of who secures the nomination.

Even former President Trump and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis would be required to sign the pledge, despite their previous reluctance to commit to such a requirement.
Evan Power, the vice chair of the Republican Party of Florida, explained that they aimed to align with the expectations set by the ongoing debates. He stated, “I don’t think this will come as a surprise.”
However, Trump has rejected the idea, saying to radio host Hugh Hewitt that his endorsement “would depend on who the nominee was.”
DeSantis has also avoided committing to supporting Trump if he becomes the nominee. In June, the Florida governor was asked if he would endorse Trump.
“It’s a significant process and, you know, you have to respect the process and the people’s decisions on how it goes. But I’m very confident that those decisions will be in our favor,” he replied.
Florida’s primary on March 15 next year could have a big influence on the Republican nomination. The election follows a winner-takes-all system, which means that not participating could have a significant impact.
Florida’s policy aligns with that of the Republican National Committee. Candidates must pledge to “support the final party nominee” to be eligible for the first debate in August.
Former Texas Representative Will Hurd is the only candidate in the current field who has openly refused to endorse a loyalty pledge. He has stated that while he will probably support the eventual nominee, he will not support Trump under any circumstances.
