The president claimed the Illinois shooter used an AR-15 and called for an assault weapons ban
On Independence Day, President Biden called for an assault weapon ban in response to a surge in mass shootings occurring in cities across the country.
In a statement on Tuesday, Biden expressed his grief for those who have lost their lives and shared his hope that communities can eventually be free from gun violence. He emphasized that it is within the nation’s capability to reinstate a ban on assault weapons and high-capacity magazines, mandate safe storage of firearms, eliminate gun manufacturers’ immunity from liability, and implement universal background checks.
The remarks follow a string of shootings in various cities leading up to Independence Day.
In Philadelphia on Monday, a man fatally shot five individuals, with four of them losing their lives. Police reported that a 2-year-old and 13-year-old sustained injuries in the incident.

In his Independence Day statement, President Biden acknowledged the one-year anniversary of a tragic shooting that took place in Highland Park, Illinois, during a 4th of July parade. The incident claimed the lives of seven individuals and left 48 others injured. The president specifically mentioned that the shooter used an AR-15 and commended Illinois Democratic Governor J.B. Pritzker for signing a bill that banned assault weapons as a response to the incident.
“I urge other states to follow Illinois’ lead; and I continue to call upon Republican lawmakers in Congress to come to the table on meaningful, commonsense reforms that the American people support,” Biden said.
